The Book Campaign:

If you are concerned about the direction this country is being led, then it is important to raise your voice in protest loudly, and in as many ways as possible, letting the legislators at the federal, state and local levels know exactly why you disagree with their policies. And of equal importance is that together, we mount a united effort to show that we are organized, many in number, and prepared to act! This is the language that politicians understand.

One action you can take is to participate in this campaign to send one or more copies of Atlas Shrugged to your federal, state and/or local politicians, along with a personal letter expressing your specific concerns. This book was selected because it vividly demonstrates what comes when a government violates its citizens' individual rights instead of protecting them. The events of the novel are rapidly becoming fact, and the overriding message we send with these books is that they must STOP before it is too late to correct the damage that is being done.

There have been some excellent suggestions by readers for things people could do to increase the impact of this action. For example, one person recommended that passages in Atlas Shrugged could be underlined or bookmarked before sending it to others, with the hope that this might get the recipient to focus on certain important messages even if they did not read the entire book. Great idea! Then another reader submitted page numbers for some recommended sections in the book.

There are a number of benefits to be realized as a result of this campaign:
• As word spreads about this action, many people who have never heard of Ayn Rand or Atlas Shrugged will become curious and decide to read the novel themselves, giving them the opportunity to see how the consequences of today's political climate will ultimately play itself out if radical changes are not made soon.

• Any media attention focused on the number of books received by the politicians opens the door to getting our messages concerning liberty, personal autonomy, individual rights, and a strict, constitutionally-limited government, out to a wider segment of the general public. Take advantage of that opportunity!

• The Tea Party rallies should have impact due to the large number of people in attendance. However, politicians have become use to this form of vocal protest and can all too easily turn a deaf ear to the message. By sending these legislators a book and a thoughtful letter, we infiltrate their personal turf with something physical, which is now more difficult to ignore and requires a different kind of response. The books also send a message that we are putting our money where our mouths are, and that we are prepared, not just to complain, but to act!

• As the number of books each politician receives grows, the massive pile of physical objects will have an emotional impact and convey the magnitude of the protest against current policies in a manner that words alone could not achieve. Let each politician take measure of the weight of our displeasure made manifest in the weight of the books received! In this way, we might be able to put the "fear of Galt" into them by letting them see that there are many like-minded people who seriously disapprove of their tactics, and more importantly, that they are becoming organized and united.

Do we actually expect the politicians to read the book and have it change their minds? Of course not. They don't even bother to read their own legislation! But that was never the point. Just as with the Tea Party protests, it is the organized act as a whole that sends the potent message, not any individual book in isolation.

The phrase "Going Galt" means many things to different people, but regardless of the specific actions any given person may adopt, it is ultimately a stand one takes in the name of the cardinal virtue of self-reliance; the act of taking responsibility for one's own life.

For many years, the culture in the United States has been on a steady slide with self-reliance being slowly replaced by dependence upon the government. And with the past two election, that slow slide has now become an avalanche. Of course, the government is incapable of providing for anyone's care since it produces nothing itself. Therefore, it is the most productive members of society who are forced to shoulder an ever increasing burden of paying for the wants and needs of the less productive, all the while struggling under an expanding net of regulations that tie their hands, keeping them from exercising their independent judgment.

It's a familiar story. It is the story of Atlas Shrugged come to life, and the hero of that story, John Galt, was the man who refused to carry the burden any longer. "Going Galt" is the rallying cry of productive individuals across the country who have reached their limit and are proclaiming "Enough!"

In the novel, John Galt convinces the other productive giants from every industry to go on strike, withdrawing their ability, and thereby allowing the world to see the exact nature of their contribution. The idea of the "strike" is wonderfully dramatic and makes its point, but is impractical in the real world. However, there is another element of Galt's action that is more relevant; the act of uniting and acting in a coordinated manner just as the strikers did. Let the Tea Parties and this book campaign be just the start of this movement that unites us in a common cause to promote the virtue of individualism upon which this country was founded.

Do your part. Attend a Tea Party and loudly proclaim your right to your own life, without government intervention. Then send your copies of Atlas Shrugged to your politicians and tell them in your letters that they have got it backwards. The government was formed to serve us by protecting our rights. We are neither their slaves nor their wards. We are independent individuals who demand our sovereignty. And we mean it!
